A line of soldiers, a pendulum walking past their stiff faces. The clicking of a heel as methodic as a metronome. The sound echoed through the empty halls of the empty room. The vinyl tiling clicked beneath every step.
“Out there are death row inmates rioting. They will get death. Either today, or on their due date. Let’s be efficient, and finish it for them. Do you understand me? We are going to go in there and bring that riot down. We are authorized to use deadly force. In and out. Easy as that. Do I make myself clear?” A female voice rang sharp and clear among the empty paneling of the room. The walls vibrated with her orders.
“Sir, yes sir!” The company responded. Their heels clicking together as their calves tightened in unison. Each soldier took into motion, a flurry of boots echoed in the halls. What once was a full room soon emptied, except for one.
The last remaining slowly walked, her heels against the thin vinyl echoed with no one to hear.
